Make a Pledge to Myself: Planks

View fullsize

When I started making a list of things to commit to this week, my No. 1 priority was to come up with things that are going to make me a better runner and get me back to PR racing shape.

Yesterday’s pledge to run a trail once a week has one really important feature in it: strengthening my core. Trails will help, but only a little bit. To truly strengthen my core, I need to do more core work, such as planks, sit-ups and push-ups.

I’ve had many ups and downs when it comes to core work. Earlier this year I was doing a pretty good job of doing core work. Along came summer and a few other stresses from life and, well, things went downhill.

Today I am making a commitment to start a plank streak and have it last through the end of the year. When I get through 2 months of doing at least 1-minute worth of planks a day, I’ll re-evaluate and determine whether to continue or to adjust as I make my way down this path. I’m pretty sure I’ve done a core streak before, only to have it fade away, so someone please ask me here or on Twitter sometime to ask how it’s going.

I’ll also add some push-ups along the way and more weights to balance things out, but that won’t make it to the list this week. I’ll be sure to add some of what I’m doing to future posts though.
