I’m confident in saying that the first half of 2014 has been a success with finding a happy-medium that I’ve been searching for since … well, I don’t really remember when. While it’s had some ups and downs, I’ve found consistency.
In the past couple of months I have enjoyed giving myself a report card for my overall health and fitness, with running playing a large part, so I felt like the same scale can be applied for the first 6 months of the calendar year.
Overall mileage: B+
Every month I’ve fallen a bit short of what I really wanted to do, but I can’t complain about being 24 miles away from 500 for the year. That’s only 4 miles a month off my goal of 1,000 miles for the year. I’m in the perfect spot to increase my mileage a bit and then get ahead of that pace.
Quality mileage: B
The photo above is a track workout I did when I kicked off June. I’ve added a decent amount of speedwork to my routine, but I know I have more in me.
Cross training: C+
When I first think about cross training, I think about my bike. If I did that, I’d give myself a D, but I’ve managed to add more weights to my routine in the past couple of months, and I’m starting to think of a July 4-Labor Day goal that will greatly enhance my cross training grade. Anyone want to do a plank streak?
Nutrition: B-
Good … but not great. Bad … but not awful. I struggle with sweets around my office. That has to end.
Attitude: B+
My attitude about running has improved drastically this year for so many reasons. I’ve gotten rid of some negativity around me in a variety of ways — I highly encourage others to do the same … or look in the mirror.
Overall grade: B
How do I get this to an A for the whole year? Run more. Run smart. Eat better. Eat smart. Cross train a little bit more. Knock off another PR to improve everything.
