Flattening the (mileage) curve

While we seem to be doing a horrible job of “flattening the curve” of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., I have successfully found a way to flatten the curve of my running miles.

After an amazing start to 2020 with my running, an injury (the same injury from the. past few years) derailed me in June. My hopes of getting to 1,000 miles for the past 12 months … gone. My hopes of maintaining a solid base this summer … GONE.

But strangely enough, I haven’t let it get me down too much. Maybe it’s the fact so many races are canceled now and will get canceled in the coming months. The “nothing to train for” statement that I hate is so very true right now. While there may be some smaller community races that move forward, I think this month is going to be full of cancellations.

While now would be a good opportunity to build some base miles, it’s also a good time to completely STOP even trying to run.

I haven’t really set too many monthly goals lately, but right now I need to. For July, I want to get back to daily walks – even if it’s really short in the middle of the day or a couple of miles in the morning, I need more time on my feet. I don’t have plans to even try running again until August.

In June, I rode my bike a few times, but that actually was bothering my foot after a few rides. Right now I want to make sure I’m riding a couple of times a week so I don’t completely lose my endurance.

I’ll also put some focus on doing sit-ups and push-ups this month once again. While my gym is open, I don’t feel comfortable going there for another month or so.
