Many years ago, running 1,000 miles in a calendar year became a very big deal to me. After falling short, I kept after it. When I finally did it, I was injured.
Then came a period of time where hitting and passing 1,000 miles was somewhat normal. I never really wanted to do too much more than that either.
Then … that goal just kind of went away.
In late 2018, I set a goal for 2019 to get to 1,000 miles, but after some down time last spring and a brief injury in the fall, I didn’t push for getting to quadruple digits.
As this year started, I didn’t set a goal for 1,000 miles in the calendar year. I figured if I got through the Blue Ridge Marathon normally, I’d get to this point in the year and be well on track for 1,000 miles in 2020 and then be public about that goal.
And, the cool thing is, I am on pace for 1,000 miles for this calendar year.
But I’m even closer to 1,000 miles for a 12-month span that I even thought I was as this month began.
Now I’m about 160 miles from 1,000 miles for between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020.
So without any races anytime soon (like, seriously … I’m wondering if the early 2021 races will now happen), hitting 1,000 miles for 12 months is my main focus through June 30.
Then I’m all about focusing on 1,000 miles for the calendar year.
With 100+ miles in January through March, I was already well over that pace. In April, I ran less (but started a run streak). In May, I want to run more than I did in April (and continue that streak).
At my current pace, I’ll get to 1,000 miles with a few runs to spare, but I know it’s a mark that I need to stay focused on.
Much more on that run streak some other time …
