Over the past few years, I’ve had very little time to write. From work to managing things with a certain Twitter chat to family life, my blog took a back seat.
I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve taken notes on my phone or jotted a few things down and not turned it into a post.
That has got to stop – I’m a happier runner when I blog, and I think I just need to post more things again even when my thoughts don’t feel complete. This isn’t my day job where the whole story needs to be told.
So that leads me to now and a follow-up to my post earlier this week where I announced that I was running the 2019 Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon.
I started a list the very next day of more reasons why now is the right time to do this race and start my training. It’s been in my Draft in my email for a few days thinking I’ll add to it.
Without delay or feeling like I’m finished, here are a few more thoughts. The first is actually new tonight:
A year ago at this time I was in a walking boot.
This injury still doesn’t make sense to me, but I think about it EVERY DAY. It’s made me so cautious with running that even though I ran a 10K 6 months later, I’m really still scared to run more than 4-5 miles at one time.
Signing up for a marathon though – especially Blue Ridge – puts a new fear inside me that I believe will help me finally move beyond this injury.
I’ve learned that winter training is better for me.
After missing a couple of real training cycles, the colder weather is so much better for me. This summer was awful and did not motivate me at all.
A real tweet from me in August says it best …
The humidity has fully won in the past several runs. Ready to be done with the summer. Thinking of a lot more cross training for the next few weeks instead. #RunChat

I know that April can bring strangely hot conditions, but I can deal with that on race day better than I can an entire season of hot weather. Give me cold. All the time.
I’m not doing Shamrock.
That was my downfall for the Blue Ridge Marathon race a couple of times. I put so much focus on that half marathon that afterward I was never motivated to keep training for this race.
Shamrock was once my favorite race, but oddly it was my biggest downfall too for doing anything else successfully in the first half of the year.
I want to do Shamrock again, but only after I finally conquer the Blue Ridge Marathon.
